ribbon works if you get a STRONG double faced ribbon, but you may have to replace it more often than if you use lacing.
para-cord can be used, as can boot laces, but I would buy corset lacing from http://www.corsetmaking.com
I find the flat lacing works better than the round lacing. I buy it by the spool for my corset making.
